An artisan is a skilled worker, a craftsperson; making individually designed and personally crafted functional pieces of art. This is a very appropriate description of my quilts.
This is the thin edging to the quilt which encloses the raw edges of the three layers all around the quilt.
Binding can be decorative or disappear into the fabric used in the border of the quilt
Some quilt edges are finished without using an applied binding. In these quilts the fabrics of the top and backing are wrapped over each other to create the finished edge.
This is the technique of stitching the 3 layers of a quilt together securely. The stitching, which passes through all 3 layers, can be plain or decorative depending on the fabrics used and design of the quilt.
The quilt top is the upper surface of the quilt, which is usually the side on display. In a patchwork quilt this is where the pieces are joined together in a pattern to create a single layer.
This is the soft layer of padding between the quilt top and backing. Historically this layer was often a mish-mash of found fibres used to give the finished item warmth and weight. Modern waddings can be synthetic or natural fibres.
My quilts are made with modern 100% cotton or 80% cotton/20% synthetic waddings which are light, warm and washable.
