Quilts made with good quality cotton material and wadding (cotton, wool or polyester) are very robust and do not need to be treated with excessive caution. However there are a few hints and tips that may help you to get the best wear out of your new quilt.
If you have been given one of my quilts than you are very lucky and someone really likes you! If you were the kind person who bought this quilt then thank you for appreciating the love and time taken in creating this artisan quilt.
- All my quilts are washable in a suitably sized domestic washing machine. Wash at 40 degrees for the best results.
- All fabrics have been tested for colour fastness, however depending on the type of washing powder/liquid there may be slight colour run in deep coloured fabrics. Try putting a colour catcher sheet in the wash the first time you wash the quilt. It will mop up any excess colour. Use a colour catcher for each wash until it is no longer needed. If it comes out clean then you don’t need to worry at the next wash.
- Quilts may be line dried or tumble dried. If tumbled dried, the quilt will dry with a more scrunched up effect. This is not a defect but simply the natural shrinkage of the fabrics and wadding used. Shrinkage can be 5-10% with certain wadding. This gives quilts an antique look.
- Once dried, do not iron out creases as this will flatten the quilt and take all the depth out of it.
- Gently iron with a steam iron only where necessary to remove heavy creasing.
- If you are storing a quilt not in use, then store it in a clean 100% cotton pillowcase or wrap it in acid-free tissue paper. Do not use other papers or plastic wraps of any kind. Keep it out of sunlight.
- Even the best fabrics will fade when exposed to sunlight. It may help to regularly turn the direction of the quilt on the bed/sofa to even out the fading. My quilts are made from some of the best 100% cotton fabrics with modern dyes, but nothing can beat the ageing power of sunlight!
